At Boise Behavioral Medicine, we understand that seeking help for your mental health can be overwhelming and uncomfortable. We want your experience to be as stress-free as possible. Our goal is to understand our patients and their needs. We deliver care with empathy and understanding while still providing a solid guide to emotional wellness. If you do not currently have a therapist or counselor, we will assist you in finding one as medication is only part of the process for achieving your mental health goals. While medication is an important tool, we will push to keep your total medication burden as low as possible. We promote overall wellness such as exercise, diet, stress-reducing activities, and life balance. We will work with your other care providers to ensure continuity throughout your treatment.
Years experience as a psychiatric provider
Years experience in the behavioral health field
You’ll have a conversation with the psychiatric provider. They will work with you to define an accurate working diagnosis, and aid you in developing a plan of care that best achieves your goals in a safe and effective manner.
The patient will be asked questions about their current concerns, behaviors, feelings, thoughts, emotional history, and physical history. Their symptoms will be examined in closer detail based on the DSM V criteria and years of hands-on behavioral health experience to obtain the most accurate diagnosis possible. We understand that in behavioral health, the diagnosis can change over time as your provider comes to better understand you and your treatment progresses.
After evaluation or assessments, your provider may prescribe medications to help control your symptoms. Frequently, medications are best used to stabilize your symptoms so that you are better able to function at work, at home, and so the therapeutic process you are engaged with is more effective.

There is very little testing per se in psychiatry. There are a multitude of screening forms available, but these are not diagnostic. We use a deep understanding of criteria and information contained in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) combined with years of experience in performing our interview in your psychiatric evaluation to ensure the most accurate diagnosis possible.
If you are feeling overwhelmed, out of control, hopeless, scared, like you aren’t as happy as you would like, or have been recommended to see medication management/psychiatry, we would love to meet with you and give you our honest assessment.
